The area around ‘Stepping Stones’

Historic Totnes, on the river Dart, is nestled in countryside of green and rolling hills with pretty villages. It has been a borough since the 10 th century and lies in the most southerly region of Devon enjoying one of the mildest climates in Britain. It has many beautiful Georgian and Elizabethan buildings of interest.

The Guildhall partly dates back to the 16 th century and was built on the site of the Priory. Inside the old courtroom is a list of mayors dating back to 1359. The castle’s circular keep and remaining walls date back to the 13 th century and the Saxon town can be seen by walking the ramparts. The future King Charles 2 nd and Oliver Cromwell both visited during the civil war.

From Totnes there are magnificent river cruises along the river Dart to Dartmouth.

Relive the age of steam trains on the South Devon Railway from Totnes to Buckfastleigh for Buckfast Abbey.

Dartington is only 2 miles from Totnes and was mentioned in the Royal Charter of AD 833. The village focal point is the Cider Press Centre with its craft exhibitions, craft shops, and the Dartington Glass shop. Cranks restaurant and home produce shop. The 14 th century Cott Inn is well worth a visit. Nearby is the well-known beauty spot of Shinner Bridge.

Buckfast Abbey is a living Benedictine monastery set in beautiful valley of the river Dart on the edge of Dartmoor. It is world famous and took 4 monks 31 years to build, its history dates back to AD 1018.

Totnes is midway between the magnificent granite uplands of Dartmoor National Park and the glorious Torbay coast.

There are many National Trust properties in the area.
